ACCIPITRIFORMES: Accipitridae
Circus assimilis
I arrived at Mosquito Creek Road near Inglewood just in time to watch a Spotted Harrier pounce on something on the side of the road just in front of me. I crept forward in my mobile bird hide (car) and eyeballed the bird as it looked surprised at having been discovered with a kill.
The Spotted Harrier took off in a flurry of wings with the poor victim hanging from its talons. There was definitely no sense of "share" from this bird.
